Condolences

Friends in SARSAV,

It is with great sadness that I write this to inform you that our Vice-President, Pete Garvey, passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 54 years old.

We know what a big part Search and Rescue played in Pete’s life, both personally and professionally. He was a major advocate for our efforts who worked tirelessly to strengthen our ties with the RCMP. Many of the advances that the organization made these past few years were due in large part to his behind-the-scenes efforts.

We are glad that Pete’s work did not go unnoticed, as he was recently honoured with the Commemorative Medal for Volunteering, the Commanding Officer’s Certificate of Appreciation for his work as the Provincial Coordinator for the RCMP “F” Div. SAR Hasty Team and other duties, and also his RCMP 30 year service pin, Staff Sgt. Pete Garvey was deserving of every accolade he received – and so many more.

Pete was a cherished member of our SAR family, and his absence will be sorely felt for many years to come. Please continue to support his family, as they are part of ours as well.

Pete’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 29th 2017.

Gloria Garvey has requested that memorial donations be made to SARSAV, as this was Pete’s wishes. This selfless gesture really speaks to the legacy that Pete wanted to leave – one of service to others. Many thanks to the Garvey family for extending this kindness to us.

For those of you who worked closely with Pete, no doubt there will be some difficult days ahead as we mourn his loss, each in our own way.

Let us all take a moment to remember him as he would want – as a true warrior with the gentlest of hearts, as a talented mentor, and as a dear friend. He was a brother who could always make you smile with his sense of humour, and was able to cheer and encourage with a caring hug.

We will miss him more than words can say. May we carry Pete’s legacy of care in service to others forward as we, by his example, give our service in SAR so that others may live.

Yours in Service,

Bobbi Buchanan
